Commissioned (Chara Games Review)

Commissioned {Chara Games}
Disclosure: I recieved a complimentry copy of Commissioned from Chara Games through Homeschool Review Crew, in exchange for a honest review.

Commissioned {Chara Games}

Do you love board games? We sure do at my house! We've been playing Commissioned from Chara Games during our family game nights. This is a 2 to 6 player game, that usually takes about one hour to play. The game is a cooperative game, which means all the players either win or lose together. In this game, all the players are apostles in the early church. The end result is to try to succeed as a group to try to grow the church by expanding into different territories and completing all tasks. It is recommended for ages 14 and up, but younger children can also participate in the game. My seven year old was old enough to understand the concept of the game and how to play, after the adults had played a few games first.

Commissioned {Chara Games}

Chara Games was started by a husband and wife team (who also homeschool their children!) in 2014. Their goal was to make Christian games that brought people together in a fun way, but that also helped them learn more about history and deepen their faith. This perfectly describes what Commissioned is about. The game board is a map of the what the territories, cities and countries were at the time of the early church. This is a great tool to use when learning Biblical history or in a Bible study, to actually see where these places were located.  It was also so much fun learning interesting facts about the different apostles. Each player gets to be one of the apostles, and you have to use their skills to help convince the other players you have the best skill set (set of cards in your deck) for what the task is at hand. Essentially, it is communicating, strategizing, and cooperating with all the people playing.

This sounds like a really easy concept, but it took four adults playing a few times for us to truly understand how to play the game the right way. There is a YouTube video by Chara Games that also helps you understand how to play, as well as instruction booklets that come with the game. This helped us answer many questions, and also taught us many historical and scriptural facts. While playing the game, the players run into many obstacles that prevent some growth of the church, but then there are also situations that all the players get excited about because there are good scenarios that bring growth to the church. We really got to see how difficult being an early apostle was, but also how rewarding it was.

Our first few times playing together as a family, we won the game. We came close to losing a few times though also. There are five pieces that go on top of a candle piece on the board game. If all five pieces end up on these candles due to different scenarios of the game, everyone loses. It was a great feeling being able to win this game though. It also prompted us to have discussions on how we can better evangelize presently.

Commissioned

We really enjoyed this review. It brought together three generations of our family together to not only have fun playing a board game, but also to learn more about Biblical history and discuss what we learned. I think this is something that can be enjoyed by all families. It is a wonderful and fun tool to help enhance Bible study in small groups, and also in homeschool studies. It can also be an interesting way to talk to a non-believing friend, neighbor or co-worker. Chara Games is named after the Greek word for enduring joy, and that's exactly what this game did. My family and I would definitely recommend this game and we are excied for future games from this phenomenal company.

Language Smarts™ Level E (The Critical Thinking Co.™ Review)

Language Arts {The Critical Thinking Co.™}
Disclosure: I recieved a complimentary copy of Language Smarts™ Level E from The Critical Thinking Co.™ through Homeschool Review Crew, in exchange for a honest review.

My family and I were so excited to be able to review this product. If you are a homeschool family or teacher, you know the name: The Critical Thinking Co.™. This company has amazing books and software for grades preK through 12th grade, that help to teach on the subjects of Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. I had first heard about this company from Cathy Duffy's 101 Top Picks For Homeschool Curriculum, and upon reviewing this company found out that this is one of many awards and honors this company has recieved.

Language Arts {The Critical Thinking Co.™}

We loved the thoroughness of Language Smarts™ Level E from The Critical Thinking Co.™. This can be used as a full Language Arts curriculum or as a supplement for fourth graders. It is flexible enough to be started at the beginning of the book, or wherever you think your child would feel comfortable starting. Don't have a fourth grader yet? The Critical Thinking Co.™ explains the Importance of Preschool Academics and suggests a software bundle your preschooler started. Some of the other members of the Homeschool Review Crew reviewed software from the Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic Before Kindergarten!™ bundle. For this review, my sons and I were blessed to look over Language Smarts™ Level E, which is a paperback book.

Language Smarts Level E

Language Smarts Level E

Language Smarts™ Level E is a 400 page colorful book that inlcudes over 50 different items of content important for a fourth grader to know, and also covers some material that a fith grader would need to know. Some of these items are Prepositions, Subject and Predicate, Adjectives, Prediction, Poems, and of course Critical Thinking skills just to name a few. The lessons are already prepared, and offer examples, charts and explanations of what the lesson is about. The lessons cover areas for reading, writing, grammar, spelling, critical thinking, vocabulary and punctuation skills and concepts. This book has won six awards, including the Parent Tested, Parent Approved (PTPA) Seal of Approval. It also helps to prepare for assessments such as the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills® (ITBS®) and California Achievement Test (CAT). I think it is fantastic that this books helps to prepare for theses assessments.

Language Smarts Level E

This book includes fun and challenging exercises such as fill in the blank questions, word searches, crossword puzzles, reading comprehension, multiple choice questions, and matching. My oldest son absolutely loves word searches. Even though this book was a little old for him, he was able to recognize and sound out the words he was looking for. I enjoyed that this book was older for him though, because it helps me know what my boys need to know for their educational futures. He did awesome in the word searches and crossword puzzles, and we were able to go over what some of the words meant. I think this book would do well for the fourth grade school year, and also as a supplement for during the summer months before fourth grade year.

Language Smarts Level E

We really enjoyed having this book as a reference for future years, and I am so excited to check out the other products available from The Critical Thinking Co.™ because of this review. I would definintely recommend for your second to fourth grade child. My oldest is seven, and he was able to do the easier exercises in this book. Do you have a child in third grade through twelfth grade? Be sure to check out Sentence Diagramming: Beginning, also available from The Critical Thinking Co.™.

Cooking Up History...Founding Presidents Micro Study (Homeschool Legacy Review)

Once-a-Week Studies {Homeschool Legacy}
Disclosure: I was provided a complimentary digital copy of Cooking Up History...Founding Presidents Micro Study from Homeschool Legacy through Homeschool Review Crew, in exchange for a honest review.

My sons and I were so excited to get to review Cooking Up History...Founding Presidents Micro Study, a Once-a-Week Micro-Studies ebook from Homeschool Legacy. My family and I love history and cooking, so this was such an enjoyable way to get to know more about our country, Presidents, and fun new recipes to try. This ebook is designed for students in first grade through eigth grade. It is a four week mini study that is 21 pages long. There are colorful photos and hyperlinks throughout the book that direct you to more information about what the topic or person is for that specific lesson.

Cooking Up History

One of the weekly units we did was on Thomas Jefferson. We learned many fascinating things about him, especially how as the Minister for France from the United States he became fluent in both the French language and cuisine. In the book, it states that he brought back the ideas for ice cream, French fries, and creme brulee to the United States. He actually served macaroni and cheese in the White House, and because that is one of my sons' favorite meals we decided to start our studies with Thomas Jefferson. It was a beautiful and elegant dish to prepare with Romano and Mozzarella chesses, and something the boys had such a good time making. The recipe is included in the book, and here are some of the pictures below of the boys preparing it:

Cooking Up History
 Step one. Boil the water!

Cooking Up History
 The fun thing about making food, is it is always a memoriable experience. There is silly conversations, laughing, and also math that comes into play. Helping to measure ingredients and counting are very important so that you can get the recipe to come out perfectly.

Cooking Up History
 The boys had so much fun making this dish!

 Our puppy tried helping too!

 Extra cheese, please!

Cooking Up History
 The finished product! It was so yummy! They did a great job!

Cooking Up History
My husband, boys and my mother-in-law enjoying our new delicious meal outside.

While we were waiting for everything to cook, we took the time to read all of the fun facts about Thomas Jefferson included in the ebook. There were also other activities included in this lesson for older children, such as reading biographies or looking up some of the coined terms from Thomas Jefferson in a dictionary. I thought it was great that the lessons could be flexible enough to include such a variety of age levels. We are also looking forward to trying out the other recipes in the other lessons included, and learning about some more amazing Presidents such as George Washington and John Adams.

I thought this micro study ebook was such an awesoome way to have history come alive. There is so much that we have today that comes from our past and history, and I think it's really important that we teach our children this knowledge. I also loved that it was in a fun way, that they could understand and truly appreciate. I also have a feeling I will never be allowed to make box macaroni and cheese again, after using this recipe! I would definintely recommend using this micro study, as well as the other studies by Homeschool Legacy. If you are looking for a fun unit study to do with the kids to learn more about Thanksgiving, check out Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims from Homeschool Legacy.
