Institute for Excellence in Writing (Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization Review)

Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization IEW Review
Disclosure: I received a complimentary set and Student Book from Institute for Excellence in Writing through Schoolhouse Review Crew in exchange for an honest review.

My sons and I have all been working on poetry memorization with Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization from Institute for Excellence in Writing. There are 96 poems and speeches included for students to learn, a Teacher's Manual, five audio CD's that have all 96 poems and speeches, and also a DVD of Andrew Pudewa's Nurturing Competent Communicators. The DVD and CDs come in a beautiful case, so it is easy to keep them all together. This set includes a complimentary PDF version of the Student Book with the purchase of the set, but the company also sells a physical copy of the Student Book as an additional purchase. (I received the physical version of the Student Book as part of the review.) IEW has a generous photocopy policy though, which allows you to print multiply copies of the student PDF version of the Student Book, but not the Teacher's Manual.

There are incredible resources that come with the purchase of this set. There are 7 Audio MP3s downloads, one of which is Andrew Pudewa's Nurturing Competent Communicators.  You may be wondering why you need the Student Book, if there is a Teacher's Manual. The Student Book has black and white illustrations with some of the poems and speeches that make the book more child friendly, a completion checklist, and also certificates of completion after the end of each of the five lesson units. The Teacher's Manual has no illustrations, but includes instructions on how to get started, optional lesson enhancements in the back of the book for each of the poems and speeches. These lesson enhancements help to continue the learning of not only Poetry and Literature, but also give ideas for lessons in Science, Sports, History, Geography, Latin, and Music. Both the Student Book and Teacher's Manual include Biographies in the appendix, which are short paragraphs of some of the authors of the poems and speeches such as Louisa May Alcott, William Blake, Sir Lewis Carroll, and Robert Frost just to name a few. If you click here, you can see some examples of the poems and speeches, and also download some samples of the Teacher Manual, Student Book, and an Audio Sample.

My sons and I have been listening to the Audio CD's in our Xbox 360, which has an awesome feature of taking the audio and makes beautiful designs to the rhythm of the audio. Both my sons are amazing audio learners, so they only need to hear something a few times to have it memorized. This has helped me oldest son so much because while he is listening to the audio CD, I also have the Student Book open to what poem or speech is being read. It has tremendously helped with his reading, spelling and identifying words. My youngest just enjoys listening to the poems and speeches, and looking to see the illustrations.  The poems we have read so far in Lesson Unit One have been fun, and my sons have loved having the illustrations included in their Student Book.

This poetry memorization with Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization has introduced my family to some wonderful authors and writers, and also some fascinating learning lessons from the optional lesson enhancements. I enjoyed the fact that this is universal learning for kids from preschool to seniors in high school, so it is a wonderful homeschool tool because it covers such a vast range of ages. I would definitely recommend this product to any homeschool family, or teacher that teaches Poetry or Language Arts.

    1. Hi, Marissa and thanks for hosting #thecozyreadingspot! It really is. I wasn't crazy about the whole memorization idea at first, but I realized once my sons know something it is easier for them to then translate that to reading and spelling. Thanks so much for commenting and hope you have a wonderful week :)
