This book was given to me to review by Tommy Nelson Publishers but the thoughts are my own.
I have noticed that we are living in a society that promotes how wonderful it is to be a princess. I think that this is great, so long as girls are taught that they can be more than just pretty princesses! I think it’s important for girls to know they are loved for who they are. My sons say that they are the princes in these stories and films. I make sure they know that the princess they choose one day has to love God and be kind. That’s Momma’s only stipulations
This book introduces you to five different girls who are awesome and unique in each way! Each character is easy to identify with according to the personality. There is a description included for each girl and a quiz in the back if your child can’t decide which one she can identify with. Each chapter starts out with a story from one of the girls and then a story of the Bible depicting the heroic efforts of women such as Rahab, Esther, Mary and Ruth. At the end of the chapter, the girl character provides a summary from her perspective and then closes in a prayer!
My sons have cousins who are girls and friends at church that are girls, so it was easy for them to identify with the girl characters in this book, as well as to see which one reminded them of one of their cousins or friends. The Bible stories are gender neutral, thanks to the amazing illustrations provided by Aleksey & Olga Ivanov. The writing by Jennifer Gerelds is also neutral because, although she depicts it from a woman’s angle, she ponders what that person may have been thinking and it makes the stories of the Bible come more alive.
At the end of the book, there are many verses described as “Brave Verses” that offer encouragement on how to be brave right from the Bible. Tommy Nelson’s Brave Girls series also offers a Brave Girls Bible and Brave Girl Devotionals. If you are looking for a fun, interactive Bible study for your daughter, niece, granddaughter or special little girl in your life, these books are amazing! And if that special girl happens to have a brother, don’t worry! He will enjoy these stories as much as she does!
