Week #9: Christopher Columbus and Birds (Homeschool Kindergarten and Preschool Learning)

Hello there and hope you are enjoying some cooler temperatures!  It always seems that Halloween brings about the cold weather.  This week, we learned about Christopher Columbus and we took off on Monday to observe the holiday and just relax. How is your homeschool year going?  Thanks for joining us for our adventures.  We're glad you're here!

Bible and Reading:
Tuesday - B did Lesson 55 out of "100 Easy Lessons" and his new words were went, those and down.  We also used Shirley Dobson's "God's Ten Best" to learn the Ten Commandments.  I had B write 1 down for God being the only God and the boys laughed when I asked if we prayed to a cup or to God (not praying to false idols.)

Wednesday - Daddy had to work late today so the boys got a chance to go to the library for story time and they read "The Three Bears' Halloween," "Leonardo the Terrible Monster," and "The Teeny Tiny Ghost."  They also got to watch a cute, short cartoon based on the book, "Trashy Town."  The theme at library time today was the letter T.

Thursday - We read "Follow the Dream," "Fine Feathered Friends," and "Birds A to Z."  B also did Lesson 56 out of "100 Easy Lessons" and learned the following sounds and words: ing, red, read, then, need, let and them.

Friday - We listened to the Bible CD in the car from Creation to Noah on the drive to visit my Mom.

Art, Music, and Physical Education:
Tuesday - B drew a picture of himself and one of his friends from church, and the 10 Commandments.  We learned the "God is so Good" song.  The boys colored a cardboard box as Columbus' ship and then got in it!  G drew a picture of the Avengers.

           Our "Map"

Wednesday - Library time was a blast!  They learned some finger plays called "Five Little Ghosts" and "The Little Ghost." The librarian made a ghost on her finger by placing a tissue and then loosely placing a rubber band around her finger, and drawing eyes and a mouth!  They also learned a song called, "Sally the Silly Snake" and each child was given a piece of green string to pretend it was a snake!  They danced with the snake to the instruction of the song.

Thursday - We went on a nature walk and tried to find birds but could only find one!  We did the "God is so Good" song. again, and then we drew a map on our cardboard box.  We drew the countries we have learned about so far and the route west Christopher Columbus pursued.

Friday - We went to go visit my Mom today and we went to the marina, beach, and two different playgrounds!  We had a lot of fun swimming at the beach and looking at all the seagulls.  The boys also had fun making music at one of the playgrounds!

Motor and Social Skills/Critical Thinking:
Tuesday - We made some brownies today and B answered his reading comprehension questions.

Wednesday - The boys got a chance to play on the computers at the library and interact with other children at story time.  No Awanas today.

Thursday - B answered more reading comprehension questions today and we had fun doing some pretend play as we learned which way was west.  G got on my back and we pretended to be explorers crossing the Atlantic into America.  The boys also helped me make dinner; country fried chicken, mashed potatoes and corn!

Friday - I love how the boys make friends wherever they go!  They had so much fun playing, splashing, swimming, and building sand castles with other kids at the beach and at the playgrounds.

        Working on those motor skills!

Captured one of those "I did it, Mom" moments!

Tuesday - B wrote sh, ch, and blue.

Thursday - B wrote ch, b, north, south, east and west.

Tuesday - We played a game today at clean up time trying to count all the toys we could throw into a bin so we called it "Clean up Basketball."  We counted to 40!  The boys also had fun measuring out the ingredients for the brownies we made today.

Wednesday - The boys counted to five today during the finger play at the library.

Science and Social Studies:
Tuesday - We did some more pretend play today with Jake and the Neverland Pirates toys as they crossed the map to go west towards America.

The "Nina," the "Pinta," and the "Santa Maria"

Wednesday - The boys learned about the trash going to the dump after it is picked up by the trash trucks from the video, "Trashy Town" at the library.

Thursday - We learned about different types of birds from the books we read and the boys learned their directions of north, south, east and west.

Friday - I didn't realize where my Mom lives how many public bird sanctuaries there are so we saw many types of birds during our visit!  The boys also got to see a crane lifting materials to the workers on the roof of a high rise!  We stared at this for about twenty minutes!  They loved seeing how much the crane could lift from the bottom and bring up the side of the building!

                         At the marina

Can you see this cute little bird?
